6 Reminders Why You Should Love Yourself This Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is officially upon us. And while we all know that the "holiday" is largely a corporate money-grab, it's still a wonderful opportunity to love and appreciate many of the special people that we have in our lives.
But thanks to the romanticism that Valentine's tends to be tied to, today can also be quite a challenging and anxiety-filled day for many.
For those in relationships, anxiety can be triggered by expectations both in terms of how one may hope to be treated, and over what one should and shouldn't do to effectively express their love. While for those that are single, anxiety can come through comparison and general feelings of dissatisfaction with the reality that one doesn't have a significant other to spend today with.
No matter what your current relationship status, in this article I'd instead like to focus on the one relationship I know that we all have going on right now. That relationship, of course, is the one we have with ourselves.
So just incase you need a little self-love pick me up, here are 7 reminders why you should love yourself this Valentine's Day:
1. You're Always There For You
You may be your toughest critic, but you're also always the most capable of truly getting yourself out of a challenging situation. We all have specific friends or family members that we regularly turn to for helpful advice, but it's only us that can put that advice into practice. Give yourself some credit for still being here and getting yourself through as much as you have.
2. You're Pretty Damn Tough
We've all been through a lot, and even though much of it may not have been pretty in the moment, it passed and we are here today. Not only that, but we also used it to make us even stronger and more capable. Choose to acknowledge and appreciate your toughness rather than always focus on your perceived weaknesses.
3. You're The Only You
Sure, a part of me would love to look a lot more like Ryan Gosling, but the more important part of me is also incredibly happy to be who I am. We live in a world where there is so much pressure to be like whatever is trending, but I say screw that, and instead pressure yourself to always be you (which can actually be a lot tougher than it sounds).
4. You're Hilarious
Whether or not you consider yourself a funny person, you are always ultimately the funniest person you know. You'll always be the one that understands your sense of humour best and knows what will leave you in stitches. Don't believe me, take some time and list off some of the funniest moments in your life, focusing on what particularly made them that way - I'm betting that you played a leading role.
5. You're Actively Looking to Improve Yourself
How can I confidently say this about everyone? The truth is, I can't. But if you're reading this article, it's because the title and concept behind it appealed to you. And the title and concept behind it is self-improvement through genuine self-love. So give yourself some credit for being open to reading some reminders as to why you should love yourself more.
6. You're Worth It
It doesn't matter who you are, we are all worthy of genuine self-love so stop believing the crazy little stories in your head that tell you that you're not.
